Bicycles everywhere

I learned two things yesterday. First thing is you are more likely to be hit by a bicycle here than a car while crossing the street. My goodness, I've never seen so many bicycles...and they ride with determination... they are not just out for a leisurely ride! Second thing, is not to be surprised by unisex bathrooms. I was in a meeting yesterday, and when it ended, I headed for the bathroom... two men followed me down the hall and entered the same room.

Today we took the train to Haarlem to visit Corrie en Boom's hiding place. I had seen pictures, but was amazed at how small it actually was. Our guide was very good and we learned many things we did not know. It was raining all day and we wandered around town in the rain. Once we got back to Amsterdam, just after this picture was taken, Ron hooked up with some of Dave's friends and went off to an art museum and the rest of us went back and took a nap. Today, jet lag really hit hard, so the nap was wonderful.

Tomorrow morning early we' re taking the train to Delft. A friend of ours who was just there said it is a lovely city, so I am looking forward to seeing, and perhaps getting a chance to visit the porcelain factory. We have to be back at 3 P.M. to leave for the airport. We just found out tonight that Dave's flight gets into a different terminal than ours in Cairo, so we'll be on our own going through customs, etc. He will hire a driver and come find us. Please pray we make our connections with each other easily.

One note...while walking down the street this afternoon, I spelled a strong smell, and when I asked if it was marijuana, I was told, of course. The sights and smells of Amsterdam!

Talk to you later,

Musing Mom

  1. Hi Cherry, Wow, you are blogging already...Butch and I stopped by your house yesterday because we were in Norfolk. Didn't have the key because it was a spur of the moment thing. After you left Thursday, we had hurricane force winds and we haven't seen anything like it since Isabel. 80 trees down just in Norfolk, horrible flooding. At the low spots on Magnolia the water reached to peoples steps. Our city streets are filthy. Your neighborhood is already starting to clean up. Your yard is covered in thousands upon thousands of pine needles and pine cones. We picked up all the branches in the driveway but it is still a mess. Can you give me the phone number of your neighbor boy and I will call him and see if I can hire him to at least rake the driveway so it does look like you are home?
If not, when we go over next week we will start raking. Butch wants to know what day is trash day? The house looks fine. The car and cover were dry. The water came up into your front yard about 10 or so feet only. I am so glad you are having such a wonderful time. I love the pictures.

  2. Well, you left on the cusp of the tropical storm. Our pond rose about a foot above the bulwarks. But I didn't have flooding as the house is on high ground.
I've enjoyed reading your blogs amd seeing photos, especially my Jewel. Give Jenny a huge hug for me and say "hi" to Dave. My, he does look handsome.
The Center was closed on Friday because of the floods and I didn't go in on Wed.Well. I'm praying for y'all. Have a God time.

    June.
